Cottesloe Beach Revitalisation Gets Green Light with $15 Million in Funding

Stage one of the Cottesloe Beach Foreshore Revitalisation Project will proceed after securing $10 million in federal funding, matched by $5 million from the local government.

Project Scope and Economic Impact

The initial phase of the project focuses on transforming the Marine Parade car park into a vibrant public plaza featuring grass terraces. Plans also include widening footpaths and significantly improving beach access for the community.

The development is expected to deliver a substantial economic boost, creating 37 ongoing jobs and 32 construction positions.

Funding Breakdown and Future Stages

  • Total stage one funding: $15 million ($10 million federal, $5 million local).
  • Mayor Melissa Harkins confirmed that the local government can now deliver stage one.
  • Harkins has called for an additional $15 million from the WA government to complete the full project, which is estimated to cost just over $30 million.

Addressing Parking Concerns

A major change involves the removal of the existing car park on the foreshore. However, stage one does not include the reconstruction of a multi-story car park on Napier Street, which remains part of the broader plan.

Interim solutions, such as temporary additional parking at Napier Street, are currently under consideration to manage the impact on beachgoers.

Reactions from Officials and the Public

WA Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti congratulated the Town of Cottesloe on securing the funding, noting that no state commitment was previously made to the foreshore project.

Residents have voiced mixed reactions. Resident Khai Fogliani expressed support for the project but emphasised the need for adequate parking. Similarly, beachgoer Rosie Lawn praised the greening initiative but stressed that "parking must be sorted" for the project to be a success.
