Jet2 Flight Diverted to Portugal After Pilot Falls Ill Mid-Flight

A Jet2 flight from Tenerife to Birmingham was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Porto, Portugal, early Friday morning after the pilot reported feeling unwell.

The aircraft, an Airbus A321 carrying up to 220 passengers, landed at Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport at approximately 2:11 AM. Emergency services met the plane on the tarmac, and the pilot was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A Confusing Scene for Passengers

While the airline later clarified that the pilot had been feeling unwell, passengers on board initially feared a more serious medical event. Reports from the cabin indicated that some travelers believed the pilot had suffered a heart attack.

Cabin crew were visibly distressed and made an announcement requesting medical assistance from any qualified individuals on board. The sudden descent and flashing emergency lights caused widespread alarm, particularly among children.

A Long, Uncomfortable Wait

After the plane landed safely, passengers faced a significant delay. They were kept on the aircraft for over an hour before being allowed to disembark.

Once off the plane, the situation did not improve immediately. Travelers were left without accommodation for approximately 13 hours in Porto while Jet2 worked to resolve the situation.

Getting Everyone Home

Jet2 arranged a replacement flight, bringing in a new cockpit crew—including a pilot flown in from Manchester specifically for the purpose—to complete the journey to Birmingham.

Jet2 apologized for the delay and emphasized that safety was never compromised throughout the incident.
