GWS Giants 26.10 (166) def. Brisbane Lions 13.10 (88)
Giants Make History with Record-Breaking Quarter
GWS produced a stunning performance at Engie Stadium, dismantling the Brisbane Lions with a final score of 166 to 88. The victory was highlighted by an unprecedented 14-goal third quarter, a new VFL/AFL record for most goals in a single quarter.
The 14-goal haul surpasses Essendon’s previous record of 13.4 set in 1982, and stands as the fourth-highest scoring quarter in league history.
Star Performers and Key Moments
- Captain Toby Greene kicked five goals, with four coming in the record-breaking third term.
- Jake Stringer also finished with five goals.
- Max Gruzewski and Aaron Cadman contributed three goals each.
- GWS's final score of 166 is the highest in the club's history.
Brisbane fought back in the final term, kicking the first four goals before the Giants steadied with three consecutive majors of their own.
Injury Updates
GWS was forced to manage without star midfielder Lachie Whitfield (hamstring) and lost Jack Buckley to a hamstring injury in the opening quarter.
For the Lions, Lachie Neale was prolific with 32 disposals, while Cam Rayner and Kai Lohmann each kicked three goals.
Carlton’s Carroll Suffers ACL Blow
Carlton midfielder Matt Carroll has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the Blues' 34-point victory over Port Adelaide.
The injury occurred in the first quarter when Carroll’s left knee buckled while chasing a loose ball. The setback comes at a particularly unfortunate time, after the young midfielder had been in strong form—including a career-best three-goal performance the previous week.
Carroll is the second Carlton player to suffer an ACL injury this season, following Jesse Motlop.
As a result, Carroll will be placed on the club’s inactive list, which opens up a selection for Carlton in the upcoming mid-season draft.
Carlton football boss Chris Davies confirmed the club would provide full support for Carroll throughout his rehabilitation.
The injury could open the door for Blake Acres to return to the senior team for his first game of the season.
