Law enforcement in Will County, Illinois, prevented a suspected school shooting on Friday after a relative of a juvenile contacted authorities.
According to the Will County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at 12:50 p.m. local time to a residence in the 2400-block of Helmar Lane in Plainfield Township following a 911 call.
Deputies recovered a Glock handgun, a backpack containing multiple loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, and gloves at the scene.
Details of the Incident
The juvenile was identified as a freshman at Plainfield High School-Central Campus. According to Plainfield School District 202 Superintendent Glenn Wood, the student last attended school in December and has a documented history of poor attendance.
The juvenile made suicidal and homicidal statements to first responders and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Investigation and Community Response
The incident occurred after students had been dismissed for early release at Grand Prairie Elementary School. Authorities stated there was no active threat to students or staff.
An increased police presence was deployed at the school for the remainder of the day. The sheriff's office stated there is no ongoing threat to the community.
As of the reports, no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
