Online retail giant Shein has announced a global ban on the sale of all sex dolls on its platform. This action follows concerns raised by a French consumer watchdog regarding products described as having a "childlike appearance." Shein has also temporarily removed its adult products category as a precautionary measure and is implementing stricter controls.
Company Actions
Shein confirmed on Monday that it has permanently banned all seller accounts linked to "illegal or non-compliant sex-doll products." The company has also removed every listing and image related to sex dolls from its platform.
Regulatory Concerns
The French consumer watchdog initially voiced concerns over the weekend regarding the description and categorization of certain dolls. The watchdog stated that the content left "little doubt as to the child pornography nature of the content."
Platform Review and Future Measures
Shein stated it will conduct a thorough review and plans to implement stricter controls for sellers across its global platform. The company has also strengthened its keyword blacklist to prevent attempts by sellers to bypass product listing restrictions.
Executive Statement
Shein's executive chairman, Donald Tang, commented on the situation, stating, "The fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for Shein." He clarified that the problematic listings originated from third-party sellers on the marketplace and affirmed the company is tracing the source to take "swift, decisive action" against those responsible.
