Chadstone Unveils Rone’s ‘Home’: A Decaying House in a Shopping Mecca

Shopping centre Chadstone has installed a new artwork by renowned street artist Rone—a dilapidated weatherboard house titled 'Home' —as part of its Light to Night festival. The installation is designed to draw visitors after dark.

“I wanted to create contrast with the clean environment of the shopping centre and evoke nostalgia.” — Tyrone Wright (Rone)

What to Expect

  • The Artwork: A full-scale replication of an abandoned house, complete with a kitchen, living room, dining room, driveway, and backyard.
  • Access: Entry is free.
  • Dates: The installation runs from June 11 to July 12.

The Bigger Picture

The project is more than an art display. Michael Whitehead, Chadstone’s general manager of property, stated the centre aims to support office tenants in bucking the work-from-home trend by offering compelling after-work activities.

“We are focused on giving office workers a reason to stay in the city after hours.” — Michael Whitehead

Background & Context

  • Rone’s Return: This is the artist’s first Melbourne installation since 'Time' in 2022, and echoes his earlier 'Omega Project' in Alphington (2017) .
  • Shifting Tenant Mix: Chadstone now features 25% non-retail space, including offices for over 6,500 workers.
  • Festival Highlights: The Light to Night festival also includes the World’s Longest Dinner for 400 guests (in collaboration with the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival) and an after-dark music festival.
