Baton Rouge Airport Prepares for Record Memorial Day Travel
Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) is gearing up for a significant surge in traffic during the upcoming Memorial Day travel period.
The airport expects over 14,000 passengers between May 22 and May 26.
Passenger & Flight Breakdown
Airlines are scheduled to operate 112 departures over the five-day period. The airport anticipates a total of 14,008 travelers, split between:
- Outbound passengers: 7,104
- Inbound passengers: 6,904
Outbound flights are projected to average nearly 90% occupancy, indicating a strong demand for departures from the capital region.
National Travel Context
The local projections align with a broader rise in summer travel nationwide.
- AAA projects Memorial Day travel will increase by roughly 200,000 travelers compared to last year, with an estimated 3.6 million people expected to fly.
- Airlines for America forecasts that U.S. airlines will carry 263 million passengers between June and August.
Record-Breaking Year for BTR
The surge comes during a banner period for the airport. BTR served approximately 847,000 passengers in 2025, surpassing the previous record of 844,025 set in 2024 by about 0.5% .
This marks the third consecutive year the airport has broken its annual passenger record, with the prior high being 821,236 in 2019.
