View source

Raleigh, NC – A 57-year-old woman is in custody after allegedly shooting two attorneys outside the Wake County Courthouse, leaving all three hospitalized.

Gwendolyn White was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of attempted murder. The victims, identified as Mary Harris and Jeffrey Whitley, are attorneys with the law firm Fox Rothschild.

Sequence of Events

  • White had attended a hearing that morning regarding a civil case she filed in 2022 against the Rolesville Police Department, seeking body camera footage of a 2021 incident.
  • The case was dismissed in January 2026; the hearing was to determine whether it should be reinstated.
  • Police reported White became “belligerent” during the hearing and left the courtroom.
  • She went to her vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and approached the attorneys in an alley, where she shot them.
  • Officers took White into custody at the scene.

Background

  • The dispute began in March 2021 when Rolesville police responded to a verbal altercation between White and two neighbors. No crime was found, but the neighbors later sought a civil no-contact order.
  • White requested body camera footage in February 2022; recordings were located in April 2022 but not provided until this year.
  • In January, a judge ordered the footage provided but did not find the police department in contempt.
  • White has filed more than a dozen civil cases since 2022, according to court records.

Current Status

  • White and the two victims are hospitalized; their conditions have not been released.
  • Authorities have not disclosed a motive, and the investigation is ongoing.
