A Riverside County couple, Donald Whitaker, 80, and Karen Whitaker, 79, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide after the wife was allegedly defrauded by someone pretending to be actor Tom Selleck.
The Discovery
Authorities discovered the bodies of Donald and Karen Whitaker on May 15 in their Bermuda Dunes home. The tragedy came to light after a neighbor, concerned by the couple's absence, requested a welfare check.
The Scam
The scheme began approximately one year ago, when Karen Whitaker was contacted on Facebook by an individual claiming to be actor Tom Selleck. The scammer initially claimed to know a deceased high school friend of Karen's, a tactic used to build trust and credibility.
Over time, the scammer gradually increased their financial requests, convincing Karen to send thousands of dollars via gift cards. Despite interventions from friends and family, including cutting up her credit cards, Karen continued to send money. The day before the couple's deaths, she had asked friends for financial assistance.
Investigation Findings
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office had been alerted to the fraud, but the scammer did not stop. Investigators stated that Karen Whitaker was a victim of financial elder abuse. Officials found no evidence linking the scammer(s) to the deaths of the couple.
Authorities emphasized that Tom Selleck is not accused of any wrongdoing.
Friend's Statement
Joy Miedecke, a friend of the Whitakers, recounted the scam details and expressed concern for elderly vulnerability to such schemes, highlighting how perpetrators can manipulate trust for financial gain.
