Australian tourist dies after falling from Inca Trail in Peru

A 53-year-old Australian man, Matthew Cameron Paton, has died after falling approximately 400 meters from a damaged security barrier on the Inca Trail near Machu Picchu.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday while he was walking with a group of tourists. High altitude rescuers recovered his body on Thursday.

"The area near the Intipunku entrance is described by police as difficult to access."

Aftermath

Paton's body was transported to Aguas Calientes township. Local authorities plan to move the body to Cusco. The Australian Embassy in Peru has been contacted.

He was traveling with his wife at the time of the incident.

The information was provided by local police and Lieutenant Abel Bejarano Cuyotupac, police commissioner of Machu Picchu. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
