Harry Maguire Left Out of England's 2026 World Cup Squad

England defender Harry Maguire announced via social media on Thursday that he has been omitted from the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. England manager Thomas Tuchel is scheduled to officially confirm the squad on Friday.

Player Reaction

Maguire, 33, who plays as a center-back for Manchester United under manager Michael Carrick, stated that he was "shocked and gutted" by the decision.

He expressed confidence that he could have contributed to the team after what he described as a strong season. In his statement, Maguire said:

"I was confident I could've played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best."

Maguire's mother also publicly expressed disappointment, describing the decision as "disgusted."

International Career Context

Maguire has made 66 appearances for England since his debut in 2017, scoring seven goals. He was part of the squad that reached the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the final of the 2020 European Championship. He also featured in the team that reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup. Injury prevented him from participating in Euro 2024.

After being excluded from the national team since September 2024, Maguire received his first call-up under Tuchel in March 2026. His most recent appearance for England was in a 1–0 loss to Japan in March 2026.

In recent years, Maguire's position in the squad has been overtaken by defenders including Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa.
