The End of an Era: Melbourne Airport Overhauls Drop-Off System

"The days of being dropped right at the door are numbered."
— Melbourne Airport Spokesman

Melbourne Airport is set to implement its biggest ground access change in 56 years, permanently closing the current departures ramp and relocating all kerbside pick-up and drop-off to a new transport hub inside the car park.

Why the change? The move is a direct response to surging passenger numbers. With traffic congestion worsening, the airport is preparing for a projected 68 million travelers annually by 2038.

New Layout & Timelines

The new pick-up and drop-off zone is scheduled to open in spring 2026.

  • Drop-off: Relocated to the new transport hub, accessible via a pedestrian bridge.
  • Pick-up: Will also move to the new hub.
  • Taxis & Ride-share: Pick-up will remain in the airport’s forecourt, but drop-off will shift to the new hub.

Walking Distances

Passengers will need to plan for a longer walk. The distance from the new zones to the terminal varies by terminal:

  • Drop-off zone to terminal: Between 172 and 350 metres.
  • Pick-up zone to terminal: Between 285 and 380 metres.

Accessibility & Costs

  • Free to use: The zone is free for all users.
  • Overstay policy: Drivers who exceed designated waiting times will be directed to the car park.
  • Mobility assistance: The Melbourne Airport assist program offers free transfers in buggies or powered wheelchairs for travelers with mobility issues, available between 6am and 10pm.

What People Are Saying

"The airport has outgrown the ramp... the downside is the walking distance for elderly or mobility-impaired individuals."
— Former MP Rod Barton

"The new arrangements will reduce congestion and improve efficiency, translating into smoother operations and faster pick-up times."
— 13cabs Spokeswoman

"We will work closely with the airport to ensure clear directions for users."
— Uber Spokeswoman

Current Construction Impact

Construction for the new hub is ongoing. As a result, reduced car parking is available across most car parks until the project is complete.
