Safety first, spectacle second: Vivid Sydney 2026 returns with massive drone shows after a year-long hiatus.
Vivid Sydney 2026 is set to dazzle from May 22 to June 13, featuring over 20 drone shows across 11 nights, with 1,000 drones per display. This marks a major return for the aerial performances, which were absent in 2025 due to rising costs associated with safety measures.
Crowd safety remains the top priority. In 2024, unexpectedly large attendance at a drone show raised serious crowd crush concerns, prompting a reevaluation of the event's logistics. Festival Director Brett Sheehy confirmed that the organization is collaborating closely with police and emergency services to mitigate risks. "Safety is the absolute priority," Sheehy stated.
Beyond the drones, the festival is planning a robust lineup of indoor activities to offset weather-related cancellations that often plague outdoor events. Over 80% of the activities will be free, ensuring accessibility for the expected 2.5 million attendees.
The program will feature a full suite of Vivid staples:
- Light installations across the city.
- Food and music events.
- Ideas talks and workshops.
The festival is expected to draw over 2.5 million visitors, cementing its status as one of the world's largest celebrations of light, music, and ideas.
