Trump Signals Possible Release of Current Tax Returns After Legal Settlement

President Trump stated on Wednesday that he may release his current tax returns after a legal settlement.

The Justice Department has agreed to permanently drop tax claims against Trump, his family, and associates as part of a settlement resolving Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns.

The settlement includes a $1.776 billion fund to compensate Trump allies who believe they were unjustly investigated. The Justice Department specified the agreement applies only to existing audits, not future examinations.

"I may even release my current returns," Trump said.

The White House referred questions about the release of returns to Trump's comments.

Background

Trump has previously promised to release his tax returns on multiple occasions but did not follow through.

In 2022, after Trump left office, Democrats in Congress released thousands of pages of his tax returns for 2015-2020. Those documents showed how he used the tax code to lower his tax obligation and revealed details about foreign accounts and charitable contributions.
