Carlton Investigates Podcast Hosts Over Vulgar Comment About Female Supporter Group
The Carlton Football Club is investigating four members of an unofficial fan podcast, "The Jumper Punch (TJP)," following comments made about a female-focused supporter group known as The Carlton Besties. The club is also checking whether the individuals are members.
Incident Details
On Wednesday night, a video circulated on social media showing a discussion on the podcast. Host Rocco Stagnitti said, "I'd punch the f* out of The Besties."** The clip shows the other three hosts laughing.
One of the hosts referenced the Carlton Respects Round, the club's annual initiative focused on gender equality and preventing violence against women. The comment was made during a discussion about a charity boxing match.
Response from The Carlton Besties
"These comments reflect how women are still viewed by some men in football spaces."
— Tori Saros, co-founder of The Carlton Besties
Tori Saros confirmed that the group filed a complaint with the club. She stated the group felt "enough is enough" following the incident and noted they had received similar comments previously. She called for continued reporting of inappropriate behavior to improve safety for women in sports environments.
Apology from Stagnitti
Rocco Stagnitti issued an apology on the TJP Instagram account. He stated that his comments were "taken out of context" and that he "is against violence against women."
In a separate Instagram post, he wrote that his intentions were not malicious but acknowledged his words promoted the wrong message and made people uncomfortable.
External Reactions
Keisha White, a Fremantle supporter, expressed disgust at the comment, citing the irony of invoking the Carlton Respects Round. Jackson Wheatley, a football fan, called for the club to ban the individuals from games.
Club Investigation
Carlton is investigating the four men involved. The club's membership department is checking whether they are club members. The club has been contacted for additional comment.
