Survivor 50 Live Finale Marred by Premature Announcement
A Production Error Shocks the Live Audience
The live finale of Survivor Season 50 on CBS experienced a significant production error when host Jeff Probst prematurely announced the result of the fire-making challenge before the segment was broadcast to the audience.
Event Timeline
During the episode, contestant Aubry Bracco won the final immunity challenge. Bracco then selected Rizo Velovic and Jonathan Young to compete in the fire-making challenge, which would determine the third member of the final tribal council.
Before the pre-recorded challenge footage was shown, Probst brought Velovic on stage to discuss his fire-making abilities. As the show transitioned to a commercial break, Probst stated, "He is the final member of our jury," indicating Velovic had lost the challenge. This prompted confusion among contestants and the live audience, with no applause or reaction. A jury member responded, "Fire hasn't happened yet."
Following the commercial break, Probst acknowledged the error. He characterized the event as a "Survivor twist" called "A peek into the future." The episode then aired the pre-recorded fire-making challenge footage, which showed Jonathan Young defeating Rizo Velovic and securing his spot in the final three.
Aftermath
The final vote determined that Aubry Bracco won Survivor 50, receiving eight jury votes. Cirie Fields received the Sia Award, a $100,000 fan-voted prize.
Statement
Jeff Probst explained the incident by stating, "In case you’re confused, this is what happened. We were going to show you fire-making and then have the loser of fire-making, Rizo, come out and talk about if he had practiced fire-making maybe he would’ve won. Instead, we did a Survivor twist, it’s the last twist of the season. We call it, ‘A peek into the future.’ So now, we’re going to watch Rizo lose in a fire to Jonathan." Probst added, "I love doing live television," and laughed off the situation.
