The Man I Love Premieres at Cannes to Extended Standing Ovation

Ira Sachs' musical drama, starring Rami Malek, debuts in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film The Man I Love, directed by Ira Sachs and starring Rami Malek, premiered on Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival. Following its screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, the film received a standing ovation; reports on the length of the ovation vary, with some sources citing eight minutes and others citing ten minutes. The film is one of two American features competing for the Palme d'Or this year.

Film Synopsis and Setting

"The Man I Love" is set in New York City during the late 1980s. The narrative follows Jimmy George (Malek), a fictional theater performance artist and singer who is confronting his mortality after receiving an AIDS diagnosis. The film explores his desire to continue creating art despite his illness.

The synopsis describes the film as a "musical fantasia of a city under duress." The plot involves Jimmy rehearsing for a stage adaptation of André Brassard's 1974 film Once Upon a Time in the East.

Cast and Production

Director Ira Sachs co-wrote the script with Mauricio Zacharias. The cast includes Tom Sturridge, Rebecca Hall, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Luther Ford. International distribution is handled by Mubi; U.S. distribution rights remain available.

"The Man I Love" is a companion piece to Sachs' 2019 film "Frankie," which also dealt with terminal illness.

This is Sachs' return to Cannes competition since Frankie. Approximately 100 cast and crew members attended the screening.

Actor's Comments

Malek has stated that he initially hesitated to accept the role due to similarities with his Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody—a character who also died from AIDS-related complications.

Malek said he felt a "certain sense of fear" and thought the role "could be problematic," but decided to proceed after consulting with director Ira Sachs.

Malek described the character of Jimmy George as "searching for creativity, love, intimacy, and joy in every moment," distinguishing him from Freddie Mercury. Sachs stated he chose Malek for his "mystery" and "star quality."

Director's Statement

After the screening, Sachs said:

"This is a film about what we can bring to each other through art, through love, through pain, through memory. And I hope there are some memories we share from this evening for the festival and our love of cinema."
