"Those are rookie numbers."

Former UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis has dismissed weight cut excuses for Khamzat Chimaev following his split-decision loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 328.

The Fight
The bout took place on August 16, 2025, in Chicago. Strickland won by split decision, becoming a two-time champion and handing Chimaev his first professional loss in 16 fights.

The Weight Cut Controversy
Reports indicated Chimaev cut 12 pounds in the 24 hours before the fight. His brother, Artur, and training partner Arman Tsarukyan attributed the loss to weight cut difficulties. Chimaev has not publicly commented.

"I think this whole weight cut excuse is ridiculous," du Plessis said. "Those are rookie numbers. That is not that bad."

Du Plessis emphasized personal accountability, stating:

"It's on you. Be more disciplined and the weight cut would be easier. When you get to Octagon, there is no excuse. Don't make any excuses. There are no excuses."

Fight Assessment
Regarding the bout itself, du Plessis stated that Strickland won three clear rounds and that the result was not a "robbery," as some observers have suggested. He praised Strickland's all-around performance.

What's Next for Chimaev
UFC CEO Dana White indicated Chimaev plans to move up to light heavyweight. Chimaev's team has called for an immediate rematch, but du Plessis argued Strickland should not be required to fight Chimaev again soon.

Du Plessis also noted the loss could be a setback or a motivator for Chimaev to develop a more complete fight game beyond wrestling.
