Pennsylvania Dental License Suspended Over Unsanitary Practices

The Pennsylvania Department of State has temporarily suspended the license of Dr. Kirti Chopra, a dentist at Smiles at Rittenhouse Square (also known as Smiles on the Square) in Philadelphia, following the discovery of unsanitary practices.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health recommends that patients who visited the clinic between April 2025 and May 2026 be tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.

Inspection Findings

According to health officials, inspectors found that instruments were not sanitized properly and supplies were reused between patients at the clinic, located at 255 South 17th Street, #2507, Philadelphia, PA, 19103. The clinic is now closed.

Patient Notification and Testing

The Health Department is working with the clinic to obtain a list of patients seen during the affected period. Letters will be sent to these patients containing testing recommendations, information about potential exposure, and details on city clinics offering testing.

Patients who receive letters are advised to contact their regular healthcare providers for testing.

Regulatory Actions

The Pennsylvania Department of State is conducting a separate investigation alongside the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. The clinic cannot reopen until unsafe practices are remedied and the dentist's license is reinstated. Health Department staff will provide infection control re-education to clinic staff.

Response from Dr. Chopra

Dr. Chopra, through her attorney, stated she is cooperating with authorities and will continue to work with public health officials on patient notification, testing recommendations, and infection control remediation. She declined to discuss the matter further due to an ongoing regulatory proceeding.
