Netflix Acquires Global Rights to Animated Film 'In Waves'

Netflix has secured global rights outside of France to the animated film In Waves, an adaptation of AJ Dungo's 2019 graphic memoir.

The acquisition deal is reportedly in the mid-seven figure range.

The film opened the 2026 Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week and has received positive reviews from critics.

About the Film

Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen and written by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux, the film features an impressive voice cast including Oscar-nominated Stephanie Hsu and BAFTA winner Will Sharpe.

The story follows AJ, a shy teenager who loves skateboarding and drawing, and Kristen, a passionate surfer, as they fall in love and navigate Kristen's sudden illness.
