Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was booked into a Dallas County jail on Tuesday after testing positive for THC, a violation of his probation terms.
The positive test triggered the immediate service of a 30-day jail sentence that was previously ordered but deferred.
Legal Proceedings
Rice was previously sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days in jail for a third-degree felony of racing and causing bodily injury, stemming from a car crash in Dallas two years ago. The Dallas County District Attorney’s office stated that the positive test for THC triggered the immediate service of the 30-day jail term, which had been ordered to be served at a later date.
Terms of his probation included a prohibition on using marijuana and alcohol.
Rice's plea agreement allowed him to choose when to serve the 30-day sentence. The incarceration began immediately following the positive test result.
Impact on Football Career
Rice is expected to miss the remainder of the Chiefs' offseason program and mandatory minicamp if he serves the full 30-day sentence. He served a six-game suspension at the start of the 2025 season after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a March 2024 street-racing incident in Dallas.
Medical Status
Rice underwent knee arthroscopy last week to remove loose debris causing inflammation in the knee he injured early in the 2024 season. According to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, Rice was unaware at the time of the surgery that he would be sentenced for the probation violation.
While incarcerated, he is unable to participate in physical therapy or rehabilitation for the knee.
Team and League Response
NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy stated: "We are aware of the report and will decline further comment at this time." The Kansas City Chiefs have not issued a statement.
