Tragic Accident: Woman Dies After Falling Into Uncovered Midtown Manhole
A 56-year-old woman, Donike Gocaj, died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Midtown Manhattan on Monday night.
The Incident
The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of West 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue. According to the New York City medical examiner, Gocaj's cause of death was scald burns with inhalation thermal injury and blunt force trauma of the torso. The death was ruled an accident.
How the Manhole Cover Was Dislodged
Con Edison reviewed video footage and determined that a multi-axle truck dislodged the manhole cover while turning onto 52nd Street from 5th Avenue. No construction was reported to be ongoing at the time.
Approximately 12 minutes after the cover was dislodged, Gocaj parked a Mercedes-Benz SUV at the location. As she stepped out of the vehicle just before 11:20 p.m., she fell directly into the open manhole, descending approximately 10 feet. The steam inside the manhole caused her to go into cardiac arrest. The manhole cover was found approximately 15 feet away from the opening.
Emergency Response
A witness, Carlton Wood, reported seeing the incident and hearing the victim calling for help. First responders arrived within minutes. Emergency personnel spent approximately 20 minutes extracting Gocaj from the manhole. She was found unconscious and transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Official Statements
Con Edison issued a statement expressing sadness and confirming an investigation. The utility stated that manhole covers can be displaced by heavy vehicles, though this is described as a rare occurrence.
The Mayor's Office offered condolences and stated that city agencies are working with Con Edison to conduct a full investigation.
