Sunshine Beach Massage Therapist Sentenced for Digital Rape of Client
Caroline Clarke was sexually assaulted during a session in November 2024
The Incident
On November 13, 2024, massage therapist Cameron Michael Petrie digitally raped and sexually assaulted client Caroline Clarke during a session at Sunshine Beach.
"I'm sorry my bad I've crossed your boundaries," Petrie reportedly said to Clarke during the assault.
Petrie, who had been working as a massage therapist for 15 years, later admitted in a pre-recorded police call to having a "crush" on Clarke.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Petrie pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court during the week of his sentencing.
On March 3, 2025, Judge Michael Williamson sentenced Petrie to two and a half years imprisonment, suspended after eight months. The sentence was reduced by two months due to several mitigating factors:
- Petrie's ongoing therapy
- Cessation of substance abuse
- Demonstrated remorse
- Low risk of reoffending
- Loss of his business
- Personal humiliation
A conviction was recorded.
Court Statements
Crown prosecutor Alex Stark detailed that Petrie digitally raped and assaulted Clarke while she was on the massage table, covered by a sarong. Petrie admitted to the rape in a pre-recorded police call.
"I've crossed your boundaries."
Defense barrister Gavin Webber cited several factors in mitigation, including Petrie's dysfunctional childhood, substance abuse, ADHD, and personal history of sexual assault. A letter of apology was submitted to the court.
Victim Impact
Clarke read a victim impact statement in court, describing profound loss of dignity, trust, and safety. She expressed disappointment with the sentence, noting the guilty plea came 18 months after charges were originally filed.
Background and Aftermath
Clarke had attended four sessions with Petrie before the assault occurred. Police executed a search warrant on December 7, 2024, leading to charges of rape and aggravated sexual assault.
Clarke made the decision to publicly identify herself, stating she hoped to encourage other victims of sexual assault to come forward and report their experiences.
