Cristian Mungiu's film Fjord had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The screening was followed by an ovation from the audience. Distributor Neon acquired the rights to the film prior to its premiere.

According to Source 3, members of the audience applauded, cheered, and shouted remarks including "Bravo" and "Free Palestine!"

Actor Sebastian Stan was described as appearing emotional during the ovation. Festival director Thierry Frémaux intervened to end the ovation due to the subsequent scheduled screening.

Film Synopsis

Fjord is Mungiu's first English-language film. The story follows a mixed Romanian and Norwegian couple who move to the wife's birthplace in a fjord village with their children. The narrative involves a couple with differing views.

The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as evangelical parents whose children are taken by Norwegian Child Services after bruises are found on their daughter.

Director and Cast Background

Cristian Mungiu has previously competed in the Cannes Film Festival. He won the Palme d'Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), the Best Screenplay award for Beyond The Hills (2012), and the Best Director award for Graduation (2016). Fjord is his seventh feature film to debut at Cannes, following R.M.N. (2022).

Actor Sebastian Stan and actress Renate Reinsve are both Cannes veterans. Reinsve previously won the Best Actress award for The Worst Person in the World.

Distribution and Statements

Neon acquired distribution rights for the film in the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The distributor acquired the rights one year prior to the film's Cannes premiere. Neon has distributed the last six Palme d'Or winners.

In remarks following the premiere, director Mungiu thanked attendees. He described the reception as:

"the moment of truth for every film"

and noted that "we'll know in 20 years that the film is good."

Related Press Conference Statements

At a press conference for Fjord, actor Sebastian Stan discussed his 2024 film The Apprentice, in which he portrayed Donald Trump.

Stan stated that the United States is "in a really, really bad place" and cited media consolidation, censorship, threats, and unresolved lawsuits as concerns.

He noted that The Apprentice faced challenges including an attempt by Trump to block its Cannes premiere via legal threats. Trump referred to the film as "garbage" and "pure fiction." Stan stated the film may stand the test of time due to the controversies surrounding it. The Apprentice premiered at Cannes in 2024.
