A medieval tower in central Rome partially collapsed on Monday, leading to one man being trapped and another sustaining critical injuries. A second section of the tower subsequently gave way during ongoing rescue efforts.
A section of Torre dei Conti, situated on the edge of the Roman Forum and near the Colosseum, collapsed shortly after 11:30 local time (10:30 GMT). One individual became trapped, and another was critically injured as a result of the initial collapse.
During the ongoing rescue operations, a second section of the 29-meter (90-foot) tower experienced another collapse, generating a cloud of dust. Firefighters present during the second incident were unharmed. They reportedly established protection around the trapped man prior to the secondary collapse.
