Cate Blanchett, serving as jury president at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, made a powerful statement about the state of gender equality in the film industry. Alongside 81 other women, she staged a red-carpet protest to highlight the stark gender disparity in film selection at the festival.
Blanchett observed that film sets remain overwhelmingly male-dominated. She described these homogeneous workplaces as "boring," noting that the lack of diversity directly affects the quality of the work produced.
Julianne Moore's Perspective
Julianne Moore also addressed the issue at Cannes, recalling a film set around 2016 where she and the third assistant camera operator were the only women present. While acknowledging that gender representation on crews has improved over the last decade, the industry still has a long way to go.
New Project on the Horizon
Blanchett announced she will star in director Brady Corbet's next film. The project is an X-rated feature set in the 1970s, and will also star Selena Gomez and Michael Fassbender.
