The Lovely Bones' Recasting: Peter Jackson Takes Responsibility for Ryan Gosling's Exit

"Anytime we recast an actor, it's actually our fault because we didn't get the casting right."

Peter Jackson has publicly taken full responsibility for the controversial recasting of Ryan Gosling in the 2009 film The Lovely Bones. Gosling was originally cast as Jack Salmon, the father of Saoirse Ronan's character, but was ultimately replaced by Mark Wahlberg.

The core of the issue? Gosling gained 60 pounds for the role without Jackson's approval.

Director's Mea Culpa at Cannes

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival after receiving an Honorary Palme d'Or, Jackson explained the difficult decision. "Anytime we recast an actor, it's actually our fault because we didn't get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role," he said.

Jackson was quick to praise Gosling, calling him a "fantastic actor." However, he emphasized that filmmaking involves complex chemistry both on and off camera, which ultimately did not align in this case.

Gosling's Side of the Story

Gosling previously addressed the firing in a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He described arriving on set to a devastating realization:

"I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed."

The actor explained that he and Jackson had differing views on the character's appearance, leading to the split.

Ronan Reflects on the Change

Saoirse Ronan, who played the lead role of Susie Salmon, recalled the casting change during a 2024 podcast interview. While she was sad to see Gosling go, she understood the reasoning.

She noted that Mark Wahlberg brought real-life fatherhood experience to the role, as he had three children at the time. That authenticity, she felt, ultimately served the story better.
