Incident
A hiker was rescued from Mount Si in Washington state on Saturday after falling 50 feet from the summit's Haystack Rock.
The King County Sheriff Air Support team conducted the rescue, as shown in video footage released by local law enforcement.
Rescue Details
The hiker fell from Haystack Rock at the summit of Mount Si, located approximately 35 miles east of Seattle. The hiker may have suffered a head injury.
Initial rescue efforts were hindered by cloud cover, wind, and snow at an elevation of 4,100 feet. Once a break in the weather occurred, the rescue team successfully retrieved the hiker and transported him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Video footage shows the helicopter hovering above the mountain with thick clouds obscuring the view. Crew members descended on ropes to retrieve the hiker and hoisted him back up.
Hiking Information
Mount Si's popular hiking trail ascends more than 3,000 feet over several miles, according to the Washington Trails Association. More than 100,000 people hike the mountain each year.
The trail is 8 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 3,150 feet.
The organization describes the trail as suitable for both experienced and novice hikers. Experienced climbers sometimes hike with weighted packs in early spring as preparation for climbing Mount Rainier.
