Anti-Israel Protest in Manhattan Follows Arrest in Terror Plot

New York, NY – A demonstration in Manhattan's Washington Square Park on Friday drew approximately 500 protesters displaying flags of Hamas and Hezbollah. The gathering occurred just hours after federal authorities announced charges against an alleged Kataib Hezbollah operative accused of plotting attacks on Jewish community centers and a synagogue.

"Antisemitism, violent extremism, and terrorism have no place in our city."
— Mayor Zohran Mamdani

The Protest

  • Protesters carried Palestinian flags, Hamas flags (including the military wing's banner), and a Hezbollah flag.
  • Chants included "globalize the intifada."
  • One speaker declared that Israel has no right to exist and vowed Palestinians would take over Israel "by any means necessary."

Context

The demonstration was organized by groups including the Muslim American Society and Within Our Lifetime. It began at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Lower Manhattan.

The Alleged Plot

The charges involve Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, described as a commander in Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia group. The indictment alleges he plotted attacks on Jewish targets, heightening tensions surrounding the protest.

Official Response

Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the alleged plot, stating: "Let me be clear: antisemitism, violent extremism, and terrorism have no place in our city. This kind of hate is despicable."
