Melbourne ‘Ride-Out’ Draws Police Action

On May 9, a group of approximately 100 young people on bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, and motorbikes converged in Melbourne for an organized “ride-out.”

The event began at the IMAX Melbourne forecourt and concluded at the DFO South Wharf car park. Participants performed wheelies and traveled across both roads and footpaths. Victoria Police monitored the event, resulting in several enforcement actions.

During the event, authorities impounded seven bikes and issued 24 penalty notices for riding offences. Riders are expected to be charged with unlicensed driving and having an unregistered vehicle.

Organizer’s Perspective

Jordan Forte, a 22-year-old organizer, offered a different view. He stated the event is intended for socializing and making friends. Forte said he discourages dangerous riding but believes authorities unfairly target young riders with fines for minor infractions.

Broader Context

Similar ride-outs have occurred in Melbourne in recent years, part of the broader “Bike Life” movement. Victoria Police has expressed frustration over these gatherings, repeatedly citing public safety risks. Meanwhile, a state MP has raised concerns about the over-policing of participants.
