How a Facebook Group and a Shared Love of Music Brought Two Musicians Together in Their 50s

Mick Medew and Ursula Collie met in 2015 through a Facebook group dedicated to local music. At the time, both were in their mid-50s. Mick was a musician, previously in the band Screaming Tribesmen. Ursula had been in a band in the 1980s but had only played a few gigs. Mick had been single for about five years after his marriage ended.

First Date and Early Relationship

After their first date, they shared a kiss in the driveway. Ursula said she felt it would work. For the first two years, they dated while Mick cared for his elderly mother. Ursula did not pressure him.

"I was in my 50s and I was working as a nanny... I'm very grateful that we've got this house." — Ursula

Moving In and Marriage

Both of their mothers died in 2018. Mick then moved in with Ursula, who had been renting her home since 2008. In 2020, they bought the house using inheritances. They got engaged in 2019 and married in 2021. Ursula was 61 at the time of the wedding.

Shared Interests and Music

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ursula began playing a keyboard and learning songs, and they started performing together. They have performed at venues such as The Triffid in Brisbane.

"She's a very happy person and I feel that when a person is happy, it's contagious." — Mick
