Patterns: Art of the Natural World

Jon McCormack’s latest monograph captures the quiet beauty of nature’s designs, many discovered close to home.

“The book is accessible and not a fine art book, with the message that nature is accessible and worth protecting.”

Titled Patterns: Art of the Natural World, the collection features photographs of natural patterns—many taken during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Shift in Perspective

In 2020, McCormack began taking daily walks near his home in Pacific Grove, California. He noticed subtle, daily changes in the landscape that had previously gone unseen. This practice transformed his focus from grand, sweeping vistas to the small patterns and vignettes hidden in nature.

The Collection

About two-thirds of the book’s images were created during or after the pandemic, while the rest come from McCormack’s archive. The photos range from far-off locations to intimately local scenes, including a macro shot of a hibiscus flower from a friend’s garden and compositions from his nearby beach.

The book serves as a reminder that nature’s artistry is everywhere—and worth protecting.
