Mets place Clay Holmes on 15-day IL with fractured right fibula

View source

The Mets will be without right-hander Clay Holmes for the foreseeable future after he sustained a fractured right fibula in the May 15 game against the Yankees.

Holmes was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 16.

The injury occurred in the fourth inning when a line drive off the bat of Spencer Jones deflected off Holmes' right leg. He remained in the game after being visited by trainers and exited after 4 1/3 innings. Post-game X-rays revealed the fracture.

Corresponding Roster Move

Right-hander Joey Gerber was called up from the minors in the corresponding roster move.

Team Context

The Mets' record is 18-26, among the worst in Major League Baseball. The team's offense has a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 85, tied for second-worst in the league. The bullpen ranks tied for fourth in combined fWAR (1.8), while the rotation's ERA (3.93) ranks 11th.

Other pitchers on the injured list include Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) and Justin Hagenman (rib fracture).

Potential Replacements

Current healthy starters include Nolan McLean, Peralta, and Christian Scott.

Options for bulk innings:

  • David Peterson, who has been used out of the bullpen recently
  • Sean Manaea, who has starter experience and has been used in relief

Prospect Jonah Tong could be recalled from the minors for a traditional starter role.
