Tragedy in San Antonio: Mother Charged After Children Found Dead in Burning Vehicle
Marlene Vidal, 34, faces two counts of capital murder and one count of arson after her two young children were discovered in a burning car on Friday morning.
Incident Details
On Friday morning, a passerby spotted a white Hyundai on fire in a warehouse parking lot on Richland Hills Drive and called emergency services. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the bodies of two children inside the vehicle.
Police arrested Marlene Vidal, 34, of Edinburg, Texas, at the scene. Vidal identified herself as the children's mother and acknowledged that authorities would be seeking her in connection with the deaths.
Surveillance footage and Vidal’s statements indicate she was the sole person responsible for the deaths, according to police. It has not been determined whether the children died before or after the fire was set. Vidal told the passerby she had already contacted police; this has not been confirmed.
The Victims
The children were identified by their father as:
- Aleeza Elena, 7 years old
- Adrian 'Akeel' Akeel, 5 years old
According to a family fundraiser, Aleeza wanted to become a doctor. Adrian was autistic and nonverbal. His father described him as energetic, charming, and fearless.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Vidal faces two counts of capital murder and one count of arson. During a magistrate hearing on Friday evening, bond was set at $1 million for each murder charge and $100,000 for arson, totaling $2.1 million.
Conditions of bond include GPS monitoring, no contact with certain individuals, and a prohibition on firearms. She requested a court-appointed attorney.

Background
Police stated that Vidal drove to San Antonio on Thursday with her children; investigators found her near the burning vehicle. Officers had previously visited Vidal’s home multiple times.
Neighbors reported that Vidal had exhibited unusual behavior in the week before the incident. One neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, said Vidal shaved her head and claimed it was due to breast cancer. The neighbor also stated that Vidal asked about gunshots the neighbor had not heard.
Community Response
By Saturday, community members had created a memorial of flowers, candles, and stuffed animals at the location where the vehicle was found. The family is raising funds for funeral expenses.
