Evan and Dat: A Timeline of Love, Adventure, and Home
San Francisco, 2015
Evan met Dat in San Francisco. Evan had just left a tourism consulting role in China to launch a Mongolian vodka business. Dat was working as a specialized nurse.
Australia, 2018
Following the election of Donald Trump, the couple decided to relocate. They moved to Australia—Evan’s home country. Evan is originally from Perth. Dat, who was born in Vietnam, had never visited Australia before they moved there together.
Busselton, 2019–2023
For five years, Evan and Dat operated the Broadwater resort in Busselton, Western Australia. This period included the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which they managed the resort through unprecedented challenges.

Venice to Athens, 2023
In 2023, the couple completed a cycling tour from Venice to Athens. The journey covered over 2,500 kilometers. Notably, Dat learned to ride a bike specifically for this trip.
Sapporo, 2023
After the cycling tour ended, the couple was in a bar in Sapporo, Japan, when they decided to get married. There was no formal proposal.
Wedding, 2024
They were married in 2024 at the Broadwater resort. Evan’s son, Travis, officiated the ceremony. Dat chose to take Evan’s surname to share a last name with Travis.
Cottesloe, Present
The couple now lives in Cottesloe, Western Australia, with their rescue dog, Harvey. Cycling remains a central part of their shared life.
