Pope Leo XIV to Make First Papal State Visit to France in 18 Years

The Holy See Press Office has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will undertake an Apostolic Journey to France from 25 to 28 September 2026.

A Historic Return
This marks the first official papal state visit to France in 18 years, following Pope Benedict XVI’s 2008 trip. The visit comes at the invitation of the French Head of State, ecclesiastical authorities, and the Director-General of UNESCO.

Key Event: UNESCO Headquarters
During the four-day journey, the Pope will visit UNESCO headquarters.

A Prior Meeting with President Macron
Pope Leo XIV and French President Emmanuel Macron previously met on 10 April 2026—their first encounter since the Pope’s election.

Established Diplomatic Ties
President Macron held multiple audiences with Pope Francis between 2018 and 2022. He has also met Pope Leo XIV on several prior occasions:

  • September 2023 – Private talks in Marseille
  • June 2024 – Borgo Egnazia G7 summit
