AI-Generated Posts Spark Customer Backlash at Burlington Bagel Shop
BURLINGTON, VT — A Vermont bagel shop is facing criticism after using an artificial intelligence tool to create social media posts that customers say misrepresented the business.
Adam Jones, owner of Myer's Bagels in Burlington, said the tool was used to generate images that combined real photos of the shop's bagels and staff with AI-generated backgrounds. The resulting images included elements such as a wood fire and a kettle—items that do not exist in the actual store.
"The AI created images combining real photos of the shop's bagels and staff with AI-generated backgrounds."
Customers quickly called out the posts for inaccurately portraying the shop, leading to a wave of backlash. In response, Jones removed the posts and issued an apology.
Despite the controversy, Jones stated he remains open to using AI in other business operations.
The incident highlights the growing tension between the promise of AI efficiency and the importance of authenticity, particularly for small businesses whose reputations depend on trust and transparency.
