ACCC Secures Major Legal Wins Against Qantas and Coles
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), under the leadership of chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb, has achieved significant legal victories against two of Australia’s largest corporations.
Qantas Settlement
The ACCC alleged Qantas sold tickets on cancelled flights, resulting in a $120 million settlement in 2024. The case highlighted systemic issues within the airline's booking practices, where passengers purchased tickets for flights that had already been scrubbed from the schedule.

Coles 'Down Down' Ruling
In May 2026, the Federal Court ruled that Coles misled customers by falsely labeling products as "Down Down" specials after temporarily raising prices. The court found that the supermarket chain engaged in deceptive pricing tactics, misleading consumers into believing they were receiving genuine discounts.
A similar case against Woolworths is currently pending before the courts.
Leadership Under Scrutiny
Cass-Gottlieb, previously a partner at Gilbert + Tobin where she represented major corporations, was appointed ACCC chair in 2022. Her background has drawn attention, with former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd expressing concern about her ties to the Murdoch family.
Despite these concerns, commentators note a remarkable role reversal in her tenure. Cass-Gottlieb has demonstrated a willingness to hold former clients and corporate peers accountable under the competition laws she now enforces.
