Three Arrested in Sydney Gold Bullion Scam

Police allege suspects used stolen business funds to purchase $500,000 worth of gold bullion.

Three individuals have been arrested at a gold bullion dealer in Sydney's CBD following a tip-off from the National Australia Bank about suspicious account activity.

The Arrests

On Thursday afternoon, police apprehended Sirelkhatim Mohamed Ali, 36; Sophoni Tumaini, 29; and Siara-Lee Barrett, 20. The trio are accused of using funds from a business email compromise scam to purchase gold bullion worth half a million dollars.

What Police Found

During the operation, authorities seized:

  • $34,000 in cash and three phones from the suspects' vehicle
  • Three additional phones and documents from a Zetland apartment

Approximately $300,000 of the allegedly stolen funds have already been recovered.

The Scam Method

Business email compromise scams involve impersonating executives to trick employees into paying fraudulent invoices. According to police, gold bullion is commonly used by criminal groups for money laundering due to its high value, portability, and limited traceability.

Bank's Role

Chris Sheehan, NAB's executive of group investigations, emphasized that banks play a critical role in identifying and disrupting financial crime and that NAB works closely with law enforcement.

Charges and Court Appearances

Barrett has been charged with dealing with proceeds of crime and participating in a criminal group. She was granted bail with conditions, including surrendering her passport and being restricted to one phone.

Ali faces charges of participating in a criminal group and dealing with identity information to commit an indictable offence. He too was granted bail with conditions, including passport surrender and phone restriction.

Tumaini faces the same charges as Ali, plus two additional counts of dealing with proceeds of crime. He did not apply for bail and remains in custody.

All three are due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on May 28.
