Explosion and fire at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine injure at least five

Incident

On Friday, an explosion and fire occurred at Robbins Lumber Inc., located at 506 Main Street South in Searsmont, Maine. Mike Larravie, communications director for Waldo County 911, reported at least five injuries. The extent of injuries is unknown.

Response

A mass casualty response was initiated. MaineGeneral in Augusta received one patient with burns who was treated and transferred to a higher level of care.

Company Statement

Co-owner Catherine Robbins-Halsted stated that all mill employees are accounted for. She did not specify if any employees were injured.

Cause

Ben Hamel, purchasing manager at the mill, told the Bangor Daily News that the fire started in an area where wood shavings are packed in plastic bags, then spread to a silo containing dust, which exploded.
