Case Details
During a routine traffic stop, uniformed officers discovered a gun in a vehicle. The driver was handcuffed after no bullets were found in the weapon. Officers also found a boy in the trunk with his hands bound and mouth taped. The driver was arrested.
Court Proceedings
Six months later, in court, a witness video showed an officer partially entering the car through an open window to see the gun. The defense argued this search was warrantless, and the judge ruled the evidence inadmissible. Despite the driver's confession to Captain Olivia Benson, the case was dismissed, and the driver, Richard Caine, was released.
Aftermath
"Benson and Assistant District Attorney Carisi expressed frustration after the dismissal."
Caine followed them outside, and Carisi physically restrained Benson from confronting him.
Subplot: Griff's Investigation
Griff informed Benson that a gun found in his father's storage unit was linked to a 1997 robbery. He suggested his father might have kept the gun and used it on a mob member, with Chief Tynan's help in a cover-up. Griff decided to withhold this information temporarily to focus on re-arresting Caine.
Confrontation
"Benson justified her actions, saying the victim was an unrepentant criminal, and stated Griff would have done the same."
Griff confronted Benson about her role in the cover-up. She justified her actions, saying the victim was an unrepentant criminal, and stated Griff would have done the same. Griff disagreed.
