Kevin Walters to lead Kangaroos through 2028 after signing two-year extension
The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has secured head coach Kevin Walters on a two-year extension, keeping him at the helm of the Kangaroos through to June 2028.
Walters will coach the Kangaroos in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup and beyond, with his contract running until June 2028.
The deal prevents Walters from coaching an NRL team until his Kangaroos contract concludes.
Strong start under pressure
Walters was initially hired on a trial basis for the 2024 Ashes series. He delivered a commanding performance, leading Australia to a 3-0 clean sweep in the UK late last year.
That result, combined with strong player feedback, convinced the ARLC to lock him in for the longer term.
Major tournaments ahead
The extension ensures Walters will oversee Australia's campaign at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which begins on October 15 and will be co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.
He will also direct the Pacific Championships in 2027.
Praise from players and chairman
ARLC chairman Peter V'landys highlighted the players' backing as a key factor in the decision.
"Feedback from Kangaroos players praised Walters as a coach and motivator."
Walters described the role as a "huge honour" and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the national side on home soil in a World Cup.
Eyes on the future
With Walters committed until 2028, attention is already turning to potential succession plans. Ivan Cleary, head coach of the Penrith Panthers, has publicly expressed ambitions to step into representative coaching. He is widely considered a leading candidate to take over the Kangaroos role once Walters' tenure concludes.
