Sex Offender Arrested After Fleeing Australia on Yacht

A registered sex offender allegedly fled Australia on his yacht without notifying police. He now faces up to five years in prison.

Court Appearance in Perth

A 57-year-old registered sex offender appeared in court on May 10 after being arrested by Thai authorities and deported back to Australia. The man, a North Queensland resident, was charged by Australian Federal Police upon his arrival at Perth Airport.

Alleged Breach of Travel Laws

The man is accused of leaving Australia in October last year without notifying Queensland Police, as required by his travel reporting obligations. He allegedly departed on his yacht, prompting an international pursuit.

The Charge

He faces one count of restrictions on overseas travel by certain registered offenders. The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.
