NYPD Cracks Down on Illegal Vehicles in Staten Island

More than 200 scooters, mopeds, and motorbikes were confiscated and destroyed by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in Staten Island on Tuesday. The operation is part of the city's ongoing enforcement against illegal and unregistered vehicles.

Escalating Enforcement

The NYPD reports a significant surge in enforcement efforts citywide. Since the start of 2026, at least 5,700 'dangerous illegal vehicles' have been seized—a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The department has identified these unregistered vehicles as a growing public safety concern.

A Deadly Connection

The crackdown follows a tragic incident on April 1, when a 7-month-old infant was killed by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting in Brooklyn. According to police, the suspects fled the scene on an illegal moped, underscoring the link between unregistered vehicles and serious crime in the city.
