Ozempic Defence Rejected in Court as Grandmother Sentenced for Stabbing Daughter-in-Law and Grandson

Wollongong District Court – June 2025

A 60-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been sentenced at Wollongong District Court.

The offenses took place in June 2024. The woman forced a family car to stop before stabbing her 27-year-old daughter-in-law in the abdomen and her 10-year-old grandson in the neck.

Victim Impact

The court heard victim impact statements from the mother, who described ongoing physical and psychological trauma, including permanent scars and persistent anxiety. The grandchild also submitted a written statement detailing the emotional toll of the attack.

"She spoke of enduring physical scars and a lingering fear that has reshaped her daily life."

The Defence and the Prosecution

The offender claimed she had no memory of the attack and attributed her actions to the side effects of the weight-loss drug Ozempic. However, the Crown prosecutor argued there was clear evidence of pre-planning.

"She inquired about the victims' intended route and followed them."

Black latex gloves and the fishing knife used in the attack were found in her car, supporting the prosecution's case that the assault was deliberate.

Custody and Sentence

The woman has been in custody since her arrest. Judge Imad Abdul-Karim will deliver the formal sentence in late June.
