Andrew Forrest's Ningaloo Reef Resort Receives Final Approval

View source

Final approval has been granted for a $70 million eco-resort development on the Ningaloo Reef, proposed by mining billionaire Andrew Forrest.

The Western Australian Planning Commission approved the project with minor amendments. Initially proposed in 2017 as an $85 million, 550-guest development, the plan was later scaled back to $70 million and 150 guests. Key issues addressed during the process included access to an Aboriginal heritage site and environmental concerns.

The resort will feature villas, a restaurant, and a spa, converting heritage-listed quarters into a reception area. Approval from the Aboriginal Affairs Minister was obtained under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society stated the project is "heading in the right direction" but urged world-leading water and energy efficiency. The Exmouth Chamber of Commerce noted groundwater concerns but welcomed the economic boost for the cyclone-affected town.
