Tasman Bridge Collapse: 1975 Ship Accident Kills 12, Disrupts Hobart
The Tasman Bridge, located in Hobart, Tasmania, experienced a structural collapse on January 5, 1975. This incident occurred approximately two weeks after Cyclone Tracy impacted Darwin and resulted in 12 fatalities.
The Incident
The vessel Lake Illawarra, carrying 10,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate, was navigating the Derwent River. At approximately 9:27 PM on January 5, 1975, the ship collided with the Tasman Bridge. An inquiry determined that strong tidal currents and the captain's handling of the vessel contributed to the collision.
Sections of the bridge's pylons collapsed, creating a gap in the structure. Falling bridge sections caused the Lake Illawarra to sink within minutes.
Casualties
Seven crew members of the Lake Illawarra died in the sinking. Five additional fatalities occurred when occupants of vehicles drove into the collapsed section of the bridge.
One driver, Murray Ling, successfully stopped his vehicle at the edge of the collapse but observed two other cars fall into the river. Another driver, Frank Manley, halted his vehicle with its front wheels at the abyss, allowing his family to exit safely.
Aftermath and Inquiry
Captain Boleslaw Pelc, 60, had his certification suspended for six months following an inquiry that concluded he had not managed the vessel appropriately. No further penalties were imposed.
The city of Hobart was effectively divided by the bridge collapse, significantly extending travel times between the eastern and western shores. Essential services such as hospitals, offices, schools, and commercial establishments were predominantly located on the western shore.
Police data indicated an increase in crime rates, including car theft and neighborhood disputes, in the months following the accident, particularly in the eastern suburbs.
Long-Term Impact and Reconstruction
In the long term, the disaster prompted urban development initiatives that improved resources and accessibility in the eastern suburbs. During the bridge's repair period, ferry services were increased to facilitate cross-river transport.
The repaired Tasman Bridge was reopened in 1977.
