Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrrell Joins Labor Party
Senator Tammy Tyrrell has announced her decision to join the Australian Labor Party, increasing the government's Senate representation to 30.
Tyrrell was first elected to parliament under the Jacqui Lambie Network banner in 2022 and became an independent in 2024.
Background and Party Affiliation
Tyrrell was elected as a senator for Tasmania under the Jacqui Lambie Network. She resigned from that party in 2024 following a disagreement with party leader Jacqui Lambie. Prior to her election, Tyrrell worked as Senator Lambie's office manager. She has now become a member of the Labor Party.
Senate Implications
Tyrrell's move brings Labor's total Senate numbers to 30. However, the government will still require support from either the Coalition or the Greens to pass legislation in the upper house.
Statements from Those Involved
Senator Tammy Tyrrell said she would not apologize for joining Labor, describing it as "a good fit." She noted that over the past four years she has "supported Labor very regularly" while also offering "pushback" on matters concerning Tasmania.
Asked about her previous opposition to Labor's proposed social media ban for teenagers, Tyrrell stated the move marked "a fresh start" and emphasized a focus on working with Labor going forward. She confirmed she will run for Labor at the next election.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Tyrrell as a "good faith negotiator" and a "strong advocate for Tasmanians" who has "made a difference" as an independent.
Precedent
Tyrrell is the second senator to join the Albanese government via a party switch in 12 months. Western Australian senator Dorinda Cox defected from the Greens in June 2025.
