Survivor’s Sister Identifies Teacher as Abuser in Decades-Long Haileybury College Scandal
Ian Walker was a promising athlete. He was sexually abused by his teacher. Two decades later, his sister finally uncovered the abuser's name.
The Abuse
Ian Walker was a student at Haileybury College's Brighton campus in 1979–1980. During this time, he was repeatedly sexually abused by teacher Rhys Walkley in the school showers.
The Disclosure
In 1988, Ian disclosed the abuse to his parents. Haileybury College told the family that Walkley was no longer with the school.
The Tragic End
Ian Walker died at age 30 after being struck by a train at Windsor station in 1997. He had a history of drug addiction and suicide attempts; the abuse is cited as a contributing factor to his lifelong difficulties.
The Search for Justice
His sister, Karen Walker, spent years seeking the abuser's identity. Her determination ultimately led to the identification of Rhys Walkley as the perpetrator.
The Institution’s Response
Former Haileybury principal Paul Aldred confirmed that Walkley was required to leave the school in 1981 due to an incident with another staff member.
The Abuser’s History
Walkley was not barred from teaching after leaving Haileybury. He later taught in Victorian public schools until at least 1994. He died in 2014.
The Advocate
Karen Walker has since become an advocate for survivors of child sexual abuse, using her brother's story to push for greater accountability and support.
