Over 1,700 Confined to Cruise Ship in Bordeaux Due to Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak

View source

More than 1,700 passengers and crew on the British cruise ship Ambition have been ordered to remain onboard in Bordeaux, France, following an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness.

French authorities suspended disembarkation on May 13, 2026, pending the results of medical tests. A 92-year-old passenger who died during the voyage is not linked to the outbreak.

Incident Overview

The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, is mid-way through a 14-night cruise that departed Belfast on May 8 and Liverpool on May 9. The ship carries 1,233 passengers, primarily British or Irish nationals.

French authorities reported that up to 50 individuals have shown symptoms consistent with an acute digestive infection. Ambassador Cruise Line reported 48 active cases among passengers and one among crew. The company stated that the number of cases increased after passengers embarked in Liverpool.

Government and Health Authority Response

On the evening of May 12, the ship’s captain alerted French authorities to the outbreak. The prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and Gironde department, Étienne Guyot, suspended disembarkation and restricted the vessel’s interactions with the port, acting on a recommendation from the regional health agency.

A specialist medical team and sanitation consultants were dispatched to the ship. Samples were collected for laboratory testing at Bordeaux University Hospital, with results expected to take a minimum of six hours. Those affected were treated by the ship's doctor and isolated in their cabins.

Operator Response

Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed that enhanced sanitation and prevention protocols have been implemented. These measures include:

  • Increased cleaning in public areas
  • Assisted dining service
  • Guidance on hand hygiene

Medical consultations for gastrointestinal illness are provided free of charge. All shore excursions at Bordeaux have been cancelled, and affected passengers have been offered full refunds. Guests and crew remain onboard until clearance is granted for disembarkation.

Passenger Death

Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed that a 92-year-old male passenger died on May 10. The company stated that the passenger did not report symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness. The cause of death has not yet been established and is pending a coroner's report.

Related Context

French authorities dismissed any link between this outbreak and a deadly hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius, which resulted in three deaths and nine confirmed cases. They stated there is no reason to establish a link.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 23 gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruise ships in the previous year, most caused by norovirus.

Operator Profile

Ambassador Cruise Line, founded in 2021, is a British operator that targets passengers over 50. The Ambition was scheduled to visit ports in northern Spain and along France’s Atlantic coast during the current voyage.
